Your feedback on my new website
Written by Richard Rout

My new website has launched today and I’d appreciate your feedback. I am aware of the missing dates in my meeting diary – this is a glitch on St Edmundsbury’s website, from which mine automactically draws the figures. Otherwise, I’m very happy with it and look forward to keeping you up to date through its pages.

A fantastic website, Richard. I am green (not politically) with envy!

Welcome back to blogging Richard. Perhaps you will continue blogging after the election this time...

Comments on the new site:
1. Nice look overall;
2. "Working for local people" is a bit lost in the header - needs more emphasis in some way.
3. When I click through to a blog post the RSS feed detection is somehow getting screwed - I have 2 scripts running which auto-detect RSS feeds on pages but they are both failing. NB - there's no problem when on your homepage or on the "Blog" page, it's just when on a blog posting page.
4. No HTML / linkbacks in comments? Tch!

Look forward to hearing some interesting stuff from you anyway.

5. The comment moderation message needs tidying up into more better English (!):
"Thank you, your comment was successfully added, but it will remain invisible until site Administrator will check and approve it."

Sorry RIchard!:

6. The RSS feed name needs sorting as well. Currently it's either "Home" or "Blog". Unsuprisingly I've subs to several blogs and yours it gonna get lost in all the noise unless it says who you are. (Eg "Richard Rout Blog")

This is the last one for now, I promise ;)

7. You can publish on blogger to your own website...: http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=41438&topic=12518

Headless,

Thanks for the tips, someone far more capable than I am is looking into them. I think I'll stick with my own setup rather than the Blogger one for now.

As for blogging before an election - I didn't. I blogged in 2008 before stopping to have a new website designed. I was elected to the Borough Council in 2007 - when I didn't have a blog.

Yes but nice site all the same!

On reading it again, my (first) message was not all that clear, which is a perfect example of why I shouldn't blog/comment too early in the day!

I meant that it would be great if you would *continue* blogging this time - whether or not you participate in, win or lose, the forthcoming election.

You blogged a little after the (town council?) election, but then suddenly all the Bury political bloggers seemed to get cold feet and gave it up (PF is now blogging lighlty again). It was a shame that you gave up last time, as I thought that you might bring something new to the discussion, but suddenly it seemed you were bringing nothing!

Thanks Headless,

Perhaps we are talking at slightly crossed purposes – my blogging did not coincide in any way with any election I was involved in (these took place in 2005 and 2007). It may have been reasonably close to when Paul Farmer won the town council by-election in 2008. However, given the history of the Town Council and its numerous by-elections, whenever I started or stopped could have been associated with one election or another!

The only reason for my stopping was dissatisfaction with the blogger setup and my desire for a new website. The problem with being involved in local politics is whenever you do something people look for the most sinister reason! I started because I wanted to and because I felt I had something to say. I stopped because I didn’t like the format at all.

The design of this website has taken longer than my involvement in any upcoming election – I was only selected to stand last week. If I could have had a site knocked up in a week I would have done so long ago.

I’m determined to continue blogging – I would have done so the last time had I been happy with the setup. Hopefully you’ll continue commenting…I’ll endeavour to keep it interesting.
