The Abbey Gardens & Nowton Park
Written by Richard Rout
We’ve had fantastic weather for the past few weeks and I thought it was worth mentioning just how good the Abbey Gardens have been looking. These photos were taken when I walked Rufus there last weekend.

The St Edmundsbury Parks department does a fantastic job keeping the gardens looking good all year round. Sometimes I think people forget just how fortunate we are to have an area like this in our town centre.

Similarly, Nowton Park has been looking pretty spectacular over the last month - as the images below testify.

Best of all, both the Abbey Gardens and Nowton Park are completely free to visit.

More information on the parks in St Edmundsbury can be found here, sadly the photographs on the website don't really do them justice.

Hellooooo! Finally found your blog, bit hidden away on your website. Lovely pictures of the parks, have been to both recently although we 'missed' the daffs at Nowton by a couple of weeks. Look forward to meeting Rufus (and you) one of these days!

Nowton and Abbey gardens cost us over half a million a year to maintain, or between £5-£6 per person in the Borough. They ARE fantastic, but only 'free' in one sense.

Should those who use them pay more than those who don't? Should parking at Nowton always be free? These are difficult questions which may have to be addressed if the government continues to reduce our annnual grant and if we want to keep council tax from rising too much.

Hi Picklesmum, glad you’ve found my blog…cunningly concealed behind the link that says ‘Blog’. Seriously though, I take your point - I’ll try to think of ways of making it more prominent. Perhaps making sure that new blog posts appear under ‘Latest News’? It would be good to meet you ‘properly’ one day, although blogger secret identities mean I’d probably walk past you unknowingly – as I did recently!

Paul, yes you raise valid points. They are ‘free’ to visitors and this is how most people perceive it rather than thinking about how their Council Tax funds them. I think everyone would agree, however, that even in this context they are excellent value. Let’s save the debate over funding for another day – I don’t have enough time to debate something that isn’t even being proposed at the moment!
